Xpeng is expanding its focus to include Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology, as showcased at a recent conference in China. The new Xpeng Kunpeng Super Electric System utilizes a gasoline engine solely as a generator, promising a combined range of up to 1,400 kilometers and an electric range of 430 kilometers. This shift comes amid declining EV demand in Europe and potential tariff challenges, as Xpeng adapts to the evolving automotive landscape.

Xpeng’s Expansion into EREV Technology

Having recently made its entrance into the French automotive market, Xpeng is already familiar to consumers in other parts of Europe. This Chinese manufacturer, known for its electric vehicles like the G6 and G9, is dedicated exclusively to electric mobility, both in Europe and beyond.

Introducing the Xpeng Kunpeng Super Electric System

In a surprising twist during a recent conference in China, Xpeng unveiled plans to broaden its focus beyond purely electric vehicles. The company announced its development of a groundbreaking technology termed the Xpeng Kunpeng Super Electric System, which will incorporate Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology.

So, what exactly is EREV? Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids that utilize a thermal engine in conjunction with an electric motor for propulsion, EREV technology employs a gasoline engine solely as a generator. This approach allows for an extended driving range without directly powering the wheels. A notable example of this technology can be seen in the Mazda MX-30 REV, which offers considerable distance beyond what standard electric vehicles can achieve.

Xpeng boasts that its innovative technology provides a remarkable combined range of up to 1,400 kilometers. When relying solely on the electric powertrain, vehicles equipped with this system can travel up to 430 kilometers on a single charge, offering peace of mind for those wary of electric driving. However, specifics regarding the gasoline engine’s design remain undisclosed at this time.

What is confirmed is the inclusion of a high-capacity battery that supports a rapid charging capability of 5C. This means the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 12 minutes using the Xpeng S5 charging station, which boasts a staggering output of 800 kW. While details about the battery supplier or technology have not been shared, there are speculations that Xpeng may utilize a battery pack recently introduced by CATL.

Interestingly, the battery pack was initially designed for plug-in hybrid vehicles, yet it aligns perfectly with Xpeng’s extended range initiative, promising an electric-only range of 400 kilometers. The manufacturer has also emphasized its commitment to maintaining a low noise level when the thermal engine activates, thereby preserving the advantages of a zero-emission vehicle.

As Xpeng pivots towards this new technology, one must wonder why the company is opting for EREV at a time when regulatory bodies are pushing for an all-electric future. This strategy may be a response to a noticeable decline in demand for electric vehicles across Europe, mirroring the approach of competitors like BYD, which are also leaning towards plug-in hybrid solutions to boost sales.

However, this shift brings with it a potential challenge. The recent increases in tariffs affecting Chinese electric vehicles will also impact EREV models. In contrast, plug-in hybrids enjoy an exemption from these tariffs. It remains to be seen how Xpeng will navigate this complex landscape as it rolls out its new technology.
