Discounter plans hundreds of new stores

Dusseldorf The lockdown in Shanghai in the spring of this year was also a major burden for Aldi Süd. The 26 markets in the metropolis had to remain closed. Employees of the discounter organized collective deliveries, with which whole neighborhoods could be supplied with groceries. Plans to open new branches came to a halt, and all construction work had to be stopped.

But now the expansion continues at full speed. According to information from the Handelsblatt, Aldi is planning hundreds of new stores in China. “China is and will remain one of the most interesting markets in all areas,” said Roman Rasinger, head of Aldi’s national company, in an interview with Handelsblatt. Because the middle class is growing rapidly, there is “huge potential in the food market”.

And that’s not all. The Chinese market has already mercilessly crushed some attempts by German heavyweights to gain a foothold there. But should Aldi be successful, the company could learn a great deal there for its future business in Germany.
