Despite the energy crisis, the government probably prefers the end of coal

power supply

Berlin, Dusseldorf The Essen-based RWE Group wants to phase out coal-fired power generation as early as 2030 – eight years earlier than previously planned. RWE boss Markus Krebber announced a corresponding agreement on Tuesday together with Economics Minister Robert Habeck. RWE now wants to invest more in renewable energies. Just at the weekend, the Essen-based company took over a solar system operator in the USA for almost seven billion euros with the help of the Emirate of Qatar.

The premature exit from coal is not just a big step for RWE. In the middle of the energy crisis, the federal government is also getting closer to promising to end climate-damaging coal-fired power generation in Germany as early as 2030.

In the short term, however, coal will have to make a bigger contribution due to the wartime shortage of gas. To prevent power outages, two coal-fired power plants are to remain connected to the grid for longer than planned.
