Despite falling inflation rates, wage demands are rising

Warning strikes in the public sector

For the 2.5 million federal and local employees, Verdi and the Civil Service Association are demanding 10.5 percent more money, but at least 500 euros.

Berlin The signs are pointing to a storm: Despite falling inflation rates, the trade unions are increasing the pressure in the ongoing wage disputes. “We’re not bluffing here,” said Verdi boss Frank Werneke to journalists in Berlin on Tuesday evening – with a view to possible strikes in the public sector. Only hours later, the union then announced that it would strike several major airports on Friday.

The situation is similar at the post office. With its 160,000 employees, Verdi is calling for a ballot on an indefinite enforcement strike starting Monday. “The employers were not willing to compensate for the real wage losses of the employees,” said negotiator Andrea Kocsis, explaining the step.

After IG Metall and IG BCE had made single-digit demands in their 2022 collective bargaining rounds for the metal and electrical industry and the chemical industry, there are now double-digit numbers in the room.
