Berlin The German Energy Agency (Dena) wants to oblige homeowners to install digital radiator thermostats before the end of this year. Digital systems would have to be “used massively in a concerted campaign so that a sufficient number of households are supplied with them in the next heating season,” said Dena boss Andreas Kuhlmann. According to him, the savings potential is “over ten percent”.

The costs of purchasing, installing and using modern radiator thermostats should not be passed on to the tenants and users, rather they should be borne by the owners. “Homeowners and operators of heating systems should be legally obliged to do this,” said the Dena boss.

Kuhlmann called for an immediate change in the law. It should be accompanied by a funding program that will cover half of the acquisition costs until December 31, 2022. In 2023, 25 percent of the costs should then be funded, said Kuhlmann.
