Certain industries could benefit greatly from demographic change – an opportunity for trend investors?

Frankfurt Very few trends can be predicted. But in one case it is different: demographic change. It is certain that the population in Germany and other industrialized countries will age rapidly in the coming decades. For investors, this means that those who take demographic change into account in their portfolio can benefit from it today – and above all in the future.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 20 million people of retirement age will be living in Germany in about ten years. Germany already has one of the highest average ages in the world. From an economic point of view, this is considered bad, because as people get older, fewer people work and more people make use of social benefits.

But the change also harbors opportunities: At the same time, the market for the needs of the elderly is growing – and these are already not small: in 2021, for example, the gross value added in the care sector in Germany was around 45 billion euros.
