The billion dollar business with sustainability is changing the industry.

Dusseldorf For many years, the management consultants have made good money, especially from the trend towards digitization. Now they are positioning themselves for a new billion-dollar business: the decarbonization of the economy.

“Sustainability has already replaced digitization as a top issue in many management floors of the German economy,” reports Walter Sinn, Head of Germany at the world’s third-largest strategy consultancy Bain & Company. Almost every second project that he advises is related to the ESG criteria of environment, social affairs and corporate governance. In three years at the latest there would hardly be a consulting project without ESG reference.

In order to be able to meet this demand, the consulting company is now taking an unusual step: it is launching a worldwide qualification initiative for all of its 14,000 consultants. The “Bain Sustainability Academy”, in which the ESMT Berlin University of Applied Sciences and the Circle Economy Foundation are also involved, aims to learn how companies can transform themselves ecologically and socially and how this far-reaching restructuring can be financed and organized.
