Date Clarified for Ethereum (ETH) Major Update: Developers Announced!

Ethereum (ETH) developers are targeting March 14 for the Goerli testnet to perform the Shanghai update. If the Shanghai launch on Goerli goes smoothly, ETH traders can expect the major update to launch on the mainnet in the 2nd week of April.

The developers agreed on the target date during their biweekly meeting on Thursday.

Ethereum Community Waits For Withdrawals To Be Opened For Staked ETHs

The test on Goerli will be watched very carefully as it is the largest public ETH testnet and is the last chance for stakers to make sure staked ETHs are withdrawable until Shanghai arrives on the mainnet.

However, it will not be possible to withdraw all staked Ethereum tokens at the same time.

After the Goerli test, only ETH developers will set a date for the mainnet. The Shanghai upgrade is also called Shapella.

The Ethereum Foundation didn’t post with a specific blog renaming the upgrade to “Shapella”, but over time the main developers started calling it “Shapella” as well.

Earlier this week, the Sepolia testnet passed through Shapella, and ETH developers said everything was working fine.

During the “execution layer 156” meeting on Thursday, ETH core developers demonstrated a general consensus that Ethereum’s main blockchain will receive the Shapella upgrade three to four weeks after Goerli.

This means that staked ETH withdrawals will occur in April, a slight delay from the original timeline that Ethereum developers set for March.
