Berlin Politicians in the traffic light coalition have expressed concern that US electric car maker Tesla does not seem to have adequately protected sensitive information from employees and customers.

“It is frightening that such a large and confidential amount of data could be withdrawn from Tesla,” said the vice-chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Detlef Müller, the Handelsblatt. “Tesla must now provide transparent information about the incident.”

The Greens traffic politician Stefan Gelbhaar asked the management of the car manufacturer to work together “quickly and closely” with the data protection officer and the works council. “The protection of employee data in particular must be guaranteed,” said Gelbhaar the Handelsblatt.

The Handelsblatt has evaluated more than 100 gigabytes of data, which according to informants should have been accessible to many employees on the Tesla systems. These “Tesla files” include 23,000 files, including Excel lists that apparently show the salaries and private addresses of more than 100,000 current and former employees.
