Cyberpunk 2077 makers were hacked: CD Projekt Red attacked – game news

It was supposed to be the biggest video game of the past year. A milestone in gaming history on top of that. But after endless postponements and a catastrophic, flawed start at the end of 2020, CD Projekt Red, the makers of the sci-fi game, are badly shaken. And now that too: The Polish servers were apparently severely hacked.

You almost feel a little sorry for the largest Polish developer studio CD Projekt Red. They now had to report an attack on their own server network via the short message service Twitter. Hackers would have switched to internal systems and infiltrated them. Areas were seized that concern both the new “Cyberpunk 2077” and the hit game “Witcher 3”, which is largely developed and maintained in Warsaw.

Blackmail attempt

The company makes it clear in its statement that it is not a joke. The cyber attackers would demand a ransom to unblock the systems.

Should the demand not be complied with, sensitive information about the games and the company would come to the public, including via the press – including allegedly unpublished parts of “Witcher 3”.

However, the requirements have not yet been specified in more detail. Rather, the hackers demand in a message (also published by CD Projekt Red) that one should report within “48 hours”.

Those responsible at CD Projekt Red emphasize not to allow themselves to be blackmailed by the gangsters and not to meet the demands. Therefore also the way to the public.

As far as it could be “overlooked”, no personal data or information about players had been compromised. However, the company has already commissioned authorities, IT specialists and forensics to investigate the matter.

The backup system is also “intact” and all data has been restored. However, further details would not be made public at this point in time.
