Berlin There should be no compulsory vaccination – this promise has been the core of the federal government’s corona policy since the beginning of the pandemic. A majority of the population is now in favor of this measure in view of the worsening corona situation.
This is the result of a survey by the opinion research institute Infratest for the ARD Germany trend. After 46 percent in August, 57 percent are currently in favor of compulsory, almost 40 percent are against.
The greatest support finds a general compulsory vaccination in the ranks of Union (73 percent) and SPD (71 percent). The support of the FDP (53 percent) and the Greens (56 percent) also outweighed the approval. On the other hand, the measure met with a majority rejection among left-wing and AfD voters.
The acting Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU), however, sees the measure critically. He was “very cautious” about a general vaccination requirement, said Spahn on Thursday evening in the ARD.

Also because he experiences that there is a lot of tension in society when it comes to vaccination. His concern is “that if vaccination is compulsory, tensions will turn into divisions”.

On the other hand, compulsory vaccination only for certain occupational groups, such as in the health and care sector, is more popular than general compulsory vaccination: three quarters of those surveyed (74 percent) are currently in favor of it.
The President of the German District Association, Reinhard Sager, also supports the measure. “We now consider compulsory vaccination for certain professional groups, especially in nursing, to be inevitable,” said Sager, the newspapers of the Funke media group. “It is important to protect the particularly vulnerable people particularly effectively,” emphasized the local representative.
The head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), Andreas Gassen, shared a lack of understanding on ZDF about people who work in homes without vaccinations. Gassen also pointed out the shortage of nursing staff and the risk that employees no longer come to work if they are vaccinated.

The board of directors of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, Eugen Brysch, is against compulsory vaccination for nurses. Brysch justified this in the Funke newspapers with the fact that “people who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered can also become infected with Corona and pass the virus on to those in need of care without being noticed”. Rather, a nationwide daily test obligation for staff and visitors in the nursing homes is necessary.
