Conversion instead of new construction: Federal Environment Agency calls for a change in construction

Berlin When the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) announces the level of greenhouse gas emissions for 2022 in March, the building sector will again perform negatively. The federal government has been missing its own climate targets for years. The authority therefore calls for a “clear priority” for the preservation of buildings. The demolition and replacement of apartments should also be limited as far as possible.

“The preservation, further development, conversion and conversion of the existing building stock must be given priority in order to avoid the high energy and material flows and additional land use caused by new construction”, is a central message from the authority, which this Monday afternoon Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz ( SPD) and Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) presented their recommendations for a turnaround in construction.
