MSI has introduced the Claw 8 AI+, a portable gaming console designed to improve upon its predecessor, the Claw 7. With a fresh two-tone design, enhanced ergonomics, and a high-quality 8-inch IPS LCD touchscreen, it aims to compete effectively in the market. Key features include Hall effect sticks, customizable RGB lighting, and robust connectivity options. While there are still minor software glitches to address, the overall performance shows promise for gamers seeking a solid handheld experience.
Following the debut of the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, the MSI Claw 7 made its entrance into the gaming market. This portable console was highly awaited primarily because it promised to introduce competition to AMD’s dominance in this sector. Unfortunately, the first-generation Intel Core Ultra integrated into the Claw 7 fell short, plagued by technical issues that were rectified too late.
Despite this setback, MSI has moved forward with the creation of the MSI Claw 8 AI+. This new portable console acknowledges the critiques aimed at its predecessor and aims to launch in a much better state. We were fortunate to receive the unit ahead of its official release in France, allowing us to test its performance. The good news is that while it still has areas for improvement, MSI has clearly made thoughtful choices in its design and functionality.

Design and Ergonomics
The initial MSI Claw resembled the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme quite closely, but with the Claw 8 AI+, MSI has opted for a distinctive design. Featuring a sleek two-tone black and sand gray aesthetic, this console stands out in a sea of similar devices, offering a unique visual identity that might not be for everyone but is certainly refreshing.
In terms of shape, the Claw 8 AI+ departs from its predecessor’s design, opting for a more geometric form that enhances its bulk. Weighing in at 795 grams, the console’s weight distribution favors the fingers rather than the palms, which is a notable change. To accommodate this, MSI has introduced small grooves on the back for better grip, making it comfortable for those who utilize finger strength. However, those who prefer resting their palms may find the ergonomics less ideal.
While the back of the Claw 8 AI+ may not boast as polished a look as some competitors, this design choice prioritizes user comfort over aesthetics, which we appreciate in a gaming device.
D-Pad, Triggers, and Buttons
The buttons on the Claw 8 AI+ deserve special mention. They follow the familiar layout of Xbox controllers, with dedicated keys for console commands located below the Start and Select buttons. This setup aligns with the standard configurations found in portable gaming consoles.
MSI has incorporated Hall effect sticks and triggers, a wise decision for durability that helps mitigate the common “stick drift” issue seen in some other brands. The joysticks are well-sized and include customizable RGB rings, adding to the visual appeal. Additionally, the back features two Macro buttons, which are standard in this product category.
One standout feature is the D-pad, inspired by Xbox’s design, which offers distinct directional buttons that enhance the tactile experience. This design makes it easy to register commands, especially for platform game enthusiasts, while fighting game players may find it less ideal.
As for the A/B/X/Y buttons, they could benefit from slightly rounded edges to improve transition between them. While this is a minor critique, it’s worth noting for future iterations.
Connectivity
At the top of the device, you’ll find a power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader, a microSD card slot, two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports offering 40 Gbps, and a combo jack for audio. The inclusion of Intel’s SoC is advantageous, providing high-speed connectivity through Thunderbolt 4. However, a USB-C charging port on the bottom could enhance usability for those who prefer charging while playing.
Additionally, the Claw 8 AI+ supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 for seamless connectivity with wireless devices.
Screen
The Claw 8 AI+ introduces an impressive 8-inch IPS LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, boasting a remarkable refresh rate of 120 Hz and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) capability. This technology allows the refresh rate to sync with the frame rate of games, enhancing overall fluidity and responsiveness—features that are unfortunately rare in portable gaming consoles.
Using DisplayCal software, we found that the display covers 103.7% of the sRGB color space and 73.5% of the DCI-P3 color space. The maximum brightness reaches 523 cd/m², ensuring excellent visibility even in bright conditions, and the contrast ratio is an impressive 1431:1 for an IPS LCD panel.
While the average color temperature sits at 6948K—slightly cooler than ideal—the overall performance of this screen is commendable, particularly for a portable console. The choice to prioritize VRR over OLED technology is a strategic one, catering to the needs of gamers.
Software
Intel assures users that previous update issues tied to Windows have been addressed, and the inclusion of artificial intelligence in the product name suggests enhancements. However, it’s important to note that the “AI+” in “MSI Claw 8 AI+” is largely a marketing term that may not significantly impact user experience.
The MSI Center M software remains mostly unchanged, but we did encounter some display glitches and translation errors that MSI is aware of and working to correct prior to the official launch. These are common challenges in the tech world, and they don’t detract from the overall promise of the Claw 8 AI+.
