Commission chief Veronika Grimm on proposals for a gas price brake

Veronica Grimm

“The federal government wanted to get a proposal for an extremely fast, unbureaucratic, but at the same time targeted gas price brake that does not counteract gas savings. It was clear from the start that this was not possible and that we had to prioritize it.”

Berlin Veronika Grimm has been on her feet for a day and a half as she sits in an office in Berlin’s government district. The “Gas and Heat” expert commission met until 6.30 a.m. Monday morning. Then we went to the Chancellery and then to the presentation of what is probably the most important German crisis instrument, the gas price brake.

The plan: Consumers should be relieved of the high gas prices. The state aid should be as high as if a kilowatt hour of gas would only cost 12 cents. This support should be available for 80 percent of consumption. Because the start is expected to last until March 2023, the federal government should bridge the gap by taking over the gas advance payments in December.

Grimm shouldn’t actually be giving any interviews: the period of silence before the publication of their annual report began a few days ago for the “Wirtschaftswisemen” of which she is a member. But she can make an exception for the Handelsblatt.
