Commerzbank corporate customer boss Michael Kotzbauer: “Have to reduce dependencies”

Frankfurt Commerzbank wants to separate its China business so that it can isolate it in an emergency. “We take a close look at how we are positioned in the region and whether there are any issues that we need to address,” said Michael Kotzbauer, board member for corporate customers, to the Handelsblatt. “For us as a bank, the main focus is on an IT landscape that is as independent as possible and on risk management.”

In this context, Germany’s second-largest private bank is also discussing with its corporate customers how they can expand globally. “China will remain an important market for German companies, but we have to reduce one-sided dependencies,” said Kotzbauer.

In the current year, the head of corporate customers, whose contract has just been extended until 2028, expects lending business to grow despite the economic slowdown. Investment activity will pick up over the course of the year. In addition, numerous infrastructure projects would have to be financed.
