When it comes to borders, Europe must finally be honest.
The fact is: if we want to travel freely in the Schengen area, the EU must protect its external borders.
That is why Poland deserves every conceivable help from Brussels when it comes to putting a stop to the politically motivated smugglers from Belarus.
When Turkish President Erdogan recently wanted to send illegal migrants to Europe and Greece had to fortify its border, the EU was happily united behind the government in Athens.
But that is not enough.
Stronger security has been required for years at the maritime border in the Mediterranean. Only: there is hardly any progress.
Anyone who wants to limit and control migration and offer protection for those who really need it in the future cannot want a Europe that is borderless to the outside world.
