Los Angeles The tragic comedy “Coda” won the Oscar for best picture. Director Siân Heder tells the story of a girl who grows up in a deaf fisherman’s family. The film won a total of three awards, as the US Film Academy announced on Monday night.

This is the first time a film from a streaming service has won the Oscar in this category – the film is being shown on Apple TV+.

Most of the awards went to the sci-fi epic Dune. The film was awarded, among other things, for the best film music and the best visual effects.

For composer Hans Zimmer and effects expert Gerd Nefzer – two filmmakers who come from Germany – it is the second Oscar each.

Ariana DeBose won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the musical West Side Story. She told the audience, “You see an openly queer, non-white woman, an Afro-Latina, who has found her strength and life through art.”

The evening was moderated by actresses Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. Actor Will Smith caused an irritating moment in the middle of the ceremony when he ran onto the stage and slapped his colleague Chris Rock in the face. He then returned to his seat and shouted loudly twice in Rock’s direction, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth!”

Earlier, comedian Rock reached out to Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and quipped, “GI Jane 2 – I can’t wait to see this.” – a nod to the movie GI Jane, in which Demi Moore stars as a soldier head shaved. Jada Pinkett Smith has been open about her hair loss in the past. At first Will Smith laughed during the ceremony, then he got up from his seat. It was unclear whether it was an actual outburst of anger or a prearranged scene.

Rock seemed a bit taken aback after the incident, but quickly recovered and quipped, “It was the greatest night in television history.”

At first, many fans on social media and also observers in US media wondered whether it was an actual outburst by Will Smith or a planned scene. Smith’s acceptance speech, however, suggested that he had indeed briefly lost his temper.

During the broadcast, a moment of silence was also called for: “We ask you to support Ukraine in any way you can.” Some guests wore blue ribbons with the words “WithRefugees”.

Actor Sean Penn had previously called for a boycott of the gala if it took place without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He himself would “melt down” his two Oscar statues in protest, Penn said. Selenski was not added to the Dolby Theater.
