Coal group Leag wants to build Europe’s first giga solar park

Dusseldorf It is an almost unimaginable area: the solar park with a capacity of one gigawatt (GW) in eastern Germany is to be as large as almost 1000 football pitches. The lignite company Leag, of all people, wants to build and operate it.

After the Essen-based energy giant RWE, the company from Cottbus is one of the largest emitters of climate-damaging CO2 in Europe. That should change. “We are making a 180-degree turn and want to build up renewable energies instead of lignite and produce green hydrogen,” announced Leag boss Torsten Kramer in an interview with the Handelsblatt.
