London: Strong increase in fighting on sections of the front in Ukraine

According to British estimates, fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops in Ukraine has recently intensified. “In the past 48 hours there has been a significant increase in fighting on numerous front sections, including those where it has been relatively quiet for several months,” said the British Ministry of Defense on Tuesday, citing intelligence findings. London did not provide any further information – not even whether the fighting was related to the expected Ukrainian counter-offensive.

Rather, the ministry emphasized that the dispute between the Russian mercenary group Wagner and the Russian army had reached an “unprecedented level”. For the first time, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed that the regular armed forces in Ukraine had deliberately attacked his units. In return, Wagner probably captured a Russian officer.

Most of the Wagner forces had now been withdrawn from the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which had been fought over for months, it was said in London. Wagner had taken Bachmut and recently announced that the city would be completely under the control of regular Moscow forces. “With Russia lacking reserve units, the extent to which Wagner continues to respond to the Ministry of Defense will be a key factor in the conflict in the coming weeks,” the British ministry wrote.
