new York Christian and Muslim content has been removed from the Apple Store in China. Amazon’s audio book service, Audible, announced on Friday that since September offers with apps that read the Bible and the Koran have no longer been available “due to requirements for approval”. Manufacturers of other apps for reading and listening to the holy books also announced that their programs had been removed at the request of the Chinese government.

Apple initially did not respond to inquiries about this. Pakistan Data Management Services, a company that offers an app called “Quran Majeed,” said it was waiting for more information from the Chinese Internet Authority on how the program could be offered again. It is used by almost a million people in China and around 40 million people worldwide. “We are trying to find out what documentation is needed to get the approval of the Chinese authorities so that the app can be offered again,” said a department head of the Karachi-based company in an email.

The US manufacturer of a Bible app, Olive Tree Bible Software, is also waiting for such information. He was told that special permission was required to distribute an app with “book or magazine content”.

Microsoft announced this week that it would close its LinkedIn career network in China this year due to restrictions imposed by the Chinese authorities.
