Beijing China’s economy recovered significantly in the first quarter. From January to March, the world’s second largest economy grew by an unexpectedly strong 4.5 percent compared to the same period last year, as the statistics office announced in Beijing on Tuesday.

After the end of the zero Covid strategy at the beginning of December and the wave of corona infections at the beginning of the year, growth in the first three months was significantly faster than in the last quarter of 2022, when it was only 2.9 percent. However, it is somewhat slower than the government planned for the current year with “around five percent”.
