China dependence of German companies harms the country

Doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. This popular definition of insanity is often credited to Albert Einstein. Wrongly so, she’s still smart. Exactly this madness allows parts of the German economy.

If February 24, 2022, the day of Russia’s all-out attack on Ukraine, taught anything, it was the value of prevention. The insight that political and economic dependencies on revanchist, authoritarian powers take revenge.

The turning point proclaimed by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is an attempt to preserve Germany’s security and prosperity in an uncertain world. But the turning point will fail if the most important corporations in the Federal Republic oversleep it.

Deutsche Telekom provides a particularly alarming example. The Bonn-based company is sticking to its partnership with the Chinese tech provider Huawei, ignoring warnings from Berlin, Brussels and Washington. Even the US China sanctions did not prompt Telekom management to reconsider its strategy.
