san francisco The text generator ChatGPT gets a paid premium version. After the free version was repeatedly unavailable due to overload, paying customers should get guaranteed access for $20 a month, the San Francisco start-up OpenAI announced on Thursday night.
The premium version under the name ChatGPT Plus should also deliver fast response times. In addition, new functions should be available there earlier than in the basic version. The service will initially be available in the United States, but will be expanded to other countries in the future.
OpenAI announced that the free basic access would continue. The users of the free version are loved – therefore free access to the text generator will continue to be offered, the company said.
ChatGPT is artificial intelligence-based software trained on massive amounts of text and data to mimic human speech. OpenAI made ChatGPT publicly available last year, sparking both admiration for the software’s capabilities and concerns.
ChatGPT is so good at mimicking human speech that there are concerns, among other things, that it could be used to cheat on schoolwork or create large-scale disinformation campaigns. This week, OpenAI therefore presented a program that is supposed to recognize texts written by computers.

The technology group Microsoft is a close partner of OpenAI. CEO Satya Nadella had announced that he wanted to add artificial intelligence functions to all of the company’s products. Microsoft’s second-ranked search engine Bing will roll out a faster and richer version of ChatGPT, known as GPT-4, in the coming weeks, portal Semafor reported.
However, the group announced on Wednesday that it would integrate ChatGPT into the premium subscription of its Teams platform.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said at a conference that he could not yet say when the improved version GPT-4 will be released – but it could take some time. ChatGPT is based on version GPT-3.5.
According to the report, the new version is characterized by a significantly faster response time and more precise answers. OpenAI also plans to launch a ChatGPT mobile app and test a new feature in its Dall-E image generator that uses artificial intelligence to create videos. Microsoft initially did not comment on the report.
However, the group announced on Wednesday that it would integrate ChatGPT into the premium subscription of its Teams platform. The chatbot can automatically generate meeting notes, recommend tasks, and help create templates, Microsoft said on Wednesday. The premium service will cost seven dollars a month in June and ten dollars from July.
Microsoft announced a billion-dollar investment in OpenAI in January. Microsoft has had a $1 billion stake in OpenAI since 2019.
