Dusseldorf Are you interested in the job as Germany’s new Federal Chancellor? Potential candidates should bring a “willingness to change”, “hands-on mentality” and a “clear vision of a sustainable economy to secure prosperity and growth” with them.

In detail, “excellent knowledge of the challenges of the labor market” is also expected, especially “in-depth knowledge of the consequences of demographic change for the economy and society”. The Stepstone job exchange condenses the requirements for applicants for the office of head of government on this profile in a fictitious job advertisement.

In addition to the desire for attention, there is also a serious intention behind the PR coup. From the point of view of the career portal, in addition to coping with climate change, the future of our working world is one of the greatest challenges for Angela Merkel’s successor.

Counteracting demographic change

The fact is: The population in Germany is getting older, millions of people will retire in the next few years and will be missing the job market. This requires a more permeable labor market, “which enables easier and faster job changes” and more flexible working models, “in order to achieve a higher participation rate for women and older workers,” says the Stepstone job advertisement.

Due to the demographic development, the number of potential workers will decrease by almost 150,000 as early as 2021, as the employment agency boss Detlef Scheele stated in the summer. In order to counteract this, “the immigration and integration of qualified specialists” is needed, according to the job description for the Chancellery.

The topics of training and further education as well as the closing of the so-called gender pay gap are also included in the job description of the job profile. According to the Federal Statistical Office, women in Germany currently earn an average of 18 percent less than their male colleagues.

Enormous workload, attractive benefits

With this enormous workload, applicants also have a few employee benefits in the chancellery job – and that despite a fixed-term employment contract. According to the fictitious job description, these include:

  • Punctual and attractive salary as well as a generous pension – after at least one full term of office
  • Service limousine including driver and a free parking space
  • An official apartment in the heart of Berlin
  • The best canteen in the country plus fitness room in the Chancellery
  • Exciting travel activities including festive banquets and famous guests
  • Company day-care center without summer closing times

In the style of classic job advertisements for high-ranking management positions, there is a final lure with the promise: “Great creative freedom or the opportunity to significantly shape the future of the country”.

Fictitious job advertisement for the Chancellery

“The job is limited to four years, but can be extended if re-elected.”

The fictitious job advertisement is not the first PR trick that the job exchange from Springer-Verlag uses during the federal election campaign to advertise its services.

Only recently, the job portal had used the celebrity factor of the CDU candidate for Chancellor Armin Laschet, who fell behind in surveys, and wrote on billboards: “Dear Armin, if the right job isn’t waiting in Berlin: there are 100,000 job offers at stepstone.de.” the Chancellor candidates of the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, Olaf Scholz and Annalena Baerbock, Stepstone had designed similar posters.
