Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin Cevdet Caner is not squeamish about his choice of words. The 48-year-old Austrian complains into the camera of his smartphone about a “criminal fool” whom he will “legally destroy”. He means the man who stylizes him as a kind of super villain in the real estate industry: Fraser Perring.
The British shortseller published a 61-page report on the website of its analysis company Viceroy Research last week. Under the heading “Bond villains” he accuses the Adler Group of fraud, manipulation and deception of its financiers. A network around Caner, who acts as a kind of shadow CEO of the housing company, should benefit. Adler denies this and announced an independent review. Adler shares fell 30 percent on the day the report was published.
