Berlin Less than three weeks ago, CDU leader Kai Wegner was described as “king without a country” in the Tagesspiegel and many other media. Although he won the election, the chances of getting the Red City Hall are slim, it said.
After all, Red-Green-Red has a stable majority and Prime Minister Franziska Giffey will hardly voluntarily give up the post she is still entitled to without being part of the CDU government.
It turned out differently and with the now clearly emerging black-red coalition for Berlin, Kai Wegner is suddenly in the limelight. For the 50-year-old, who regularly has to endure ridicule simply because of his origin and roots in Spandau, the satisfaction should be almost limitless. Wegner, who was denigrated as a “garden gnome” when he ran for the CDU presidency in 2019, is close to his goal: moving into the Red City Hall.
