Can private investors earn money with CO2 certificates?

Dusseldorf If industrial companies in Europe emit CO2, then they have to buy pollution rights for it – through CO2 certificates. These are issued via the European Emission Trading System (ETS). However, only a few know that as a private investor you can also speculate on the price of CO2. There are securities that can be deposited with CO2 certificates.

Can you make money and protect the climate at the same time? The Hamburg environmental economist Grischa Perino says: No. “As an investor, you have to decide between climate protection and returns,” says Perino. The economist believes it is legitimate to trade in CO2 certificates on the market and earn money with them. “What is not legitimate is to claim that this also protects the climate.”

Also: The armaments group Rheinmetall has founded a joint venture with the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukroboronprom and wants to build a tank factory in Ukraine. A German company will thus play a central role in defending the country against the Russian armed forces. Their answer was not long in coming.
