Can an applicant demand too much salary?

Berlin Because of inflation, many companies are concentrating on salary increases for the employees who earn the least. That doesn’t necessarily make things easier for those who want to negotiate their salary.

Because executives and managers in top positions or sought-after talents also want salary increases – and companies urgently need to retain these workers in times of a historical shortage of specialists and executives.

Whether it’s a job interview or a salary negotiation in an existing employment relationship, talented people hear a question again and again: “What salary do you have in mind?” And then it gets tricky. Because many are worried that they will speculate and that too high demands could shoot them out.

The Handelsblatt spoke to three experts about whether there could be too much of an answer.

Sebastian Pacher, remuneration expert at Kienbaum HR consultancy, Andreas von Specht, private equity consultant, and Claudia Kimich, negotiation expert, provide the answers.
