BYD said it has sold more than 1 million cars, including plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so far in 2024. That means the company has reached a major milestone before the end of the year. August sales were also at an all-time high.
BYD sells 1 million electric cars in nine months
BYD announced that it sold 373,082 hybrid and electric cars in August alone, breaking the previous record set in July. Plug-in hybrid vehicle sales exceeded 222,000 units in August, marking the company’s sixth consecutive record.

Electric vehicle sales also increased in August, reaching 148,000. Accordingly, BYD’s total vehicle sales for the year exceeded the 1 million mark as of August, reaching 1 million 4623 units. This represents a 12 percent growth compared to the same period last year.
BYD’s sales outside of China also increased by 26 percent compared to the previous year, reaching over 31,000 vehicles. It announced that it had sold approximately 265,000 vehicles internationally as of the end of August.
The August sales figures marked BYD’s third consecutive month of monthly sales records. This success reflects BYD’s popular models such as the Dolphin, Seal and Atto 3. The company is also entering several new markets, including Turkey.

The company also has ambitious goals in Europe. BYD Europe CEO Michael Shu announced earlier this year that they were targeting a 5 percent share of the European electric vehicle market ahead of the opening of the Hungarian factory.
