Zurich, Frankfurt, Vienna Company patriarch Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler owns one, as does ex-Bertelsmann boss Mark Wössner: a property in the Austrian Alps. But not only industrialists, top managers and millionaires dream of their own ski hut in another European country.

Many mere mortals and investors are also tempted by the thought of buying a mountain hut in the Alps at the start of the ski season. The demand for first-class residential properties in ski resorts is unbroken despite the effects of the pandemic on international travel.

As a result, real estate and land prices in winter sports resorts such as Gstaad, St. Moritz, Kitzbühel or Kaprun in the Salzburg region have recently risen significantly.

According to current figures from the real estate investment manager Savills, the asking prices for premium and luxury residential properties in the 46 ski areas surveyed worldwide rose by an average of more than 20 percent in 2021.
