Berlin The Inspector of the Army, Lieutenant General Alfons Mais, expressed surprise at the “naiveness” with which Russia went to war. At the same time, the general warned against underestimating the Russian armed forces. “With its artillery superiority, the Russian army is apparently working its way forward kilometer by kilometer. This is a war of attrition and attrition that will raise the question of how long Ukraine can hold out,” he told Handelsblatt.

At the beginning of the Ukraine war, Mais caused a stir when he wrote on the LinkedIn careers network that the army was “pretty blank”. The Bundeswehr can fulfill all tasks assigned to it, if they have enough preparation time to organize material and personnel, the supreme army chief now clarified in the interview. “But if it has to be done very quickly, we have problems. And given the changing times, we can no longer afford that.”
