London The UK auto industry produced fewer vehicles in September than it has produced in that month for nearly 40 years. A total of 67,169 cars were produced, as the industry association SMMT announced on Thursday. That was the worst September figure since 1982. With a minus of 41.5 percent compared to the same month last year, it was the third consecutive month’s decline.
It is a worrying trend, emphasized the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The global shortage of semiconductors continued to cause problems.
In contrast, the production of cars with alternative drives increased significantly – almost a third of all vehicles are battery-powered, plug-in hybrids or hybrids.
