Frankfurt A proton, an electron and a lot of hype on the capital markets. Investors are already betting that demand for hydrogen will increase in the future. They see it as an important factor in the energy transition: It is easy to transport and can be generated using renewable energies – and could thus replace fossil natural gas.

“In all areas in which green electricity reaches its limits in terms of decarbonization, green hydrogen makes progress. Green hydrogen therefore has enormous potential for the future,” says Thomas Engelmann, Head of Energy Transition at asset manager KGAL.

This makes hydrogen an investment theme: Shares in hydrogen companies such as Nel or Ballard Power have risen sharply several times in recent years – and often gave way shortly afterwards. These individual risks can be mitigated in part thanks to diversified exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The Handelsblatt presents various ETFs.
