Julian Weigl (27) is spending the World Cup break with his wife Sarah and daughter Bruna Marie (1) in Mauritius, where he is recovering from his first half series in the Gladbach jersey.
Borussia’s member magazine “FohlenEcho – Das Magazin” gave an interview to Weigl before leaving for vacation – and made it clear that he was not necessarily planning to return to Benfica Lisbon after his one-year loan. But would like to stay in Gladbach…

Weigl: “I’m someone who basically longs for continuity and doesn’t want to play at one club one year and at another the year after. So I made a very conscious decision to make this change. I quickly thought that I would feel at home here and of course that I could also imagine staying longer. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here now. We’ll see what happens beyond that, and I’m not the one to decide that either.”
For example, Borussia would have to decide how much money the club wants to put on the table for Weigl as a fee. According to transfermarkt.de, the midfielder currently has a market value of 15 million euros. Benfica Lisbon (where Weigl still has a contract until 2024) is planning a transfer fee in the double-digit millions – which would not be easy for Borussia to manage.
Fact: After just under three months, Weigl has settled in perfectly in Gladbach!
Weigl: “It never felt like I’d only been here for a few days. I got into the team really quickly. The relationship with the boys was open right away, so it obviously helped that you knew some of the national team or BVB. But I already knew when I came here that I would feel something at the club. I always thought Borussia was great as a club. I’ve heard a lot of good things from the guys I know who used to play for Gladbach, and that was completely confirmed in the first few days.”
Weigl continues to rave: “I’ve always seen that the club stands for values that I can identify with 100 percent. I also like the classic “Borussia football” that is played here. Of course, that always depends on a coach and there are years when a different style prevails. But I have always associated football with Borussia that I like: a lot of possession, worth seeing and fun to play.”
And it is precisely this type of football that Weigl wants to enjoy in Gladbach for a long time to come…
