Last week, 98,000 new corona infections were counted across Africa – one 88 percent increase compared to the previous week. However, 79 percent of this came from South Africa. Now that the Cape state has entered its fourth wave of infections, twelve countries are in this phase so far – Mauritius is entering its fifth, according to the Africa CDC. The continent has now procured 431 million vaccine doses, but only 7.4 percent of the population in Africa are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. The number of tests rose last week by 14 percent to just under a million.
The CDC is trying to pool the resources of the African states and coordinate measures in the fight against the pandemic. According to the CDC, a total of around 8.7 million infections have been documented in Africa so far, of which more than 224,000 were fatal. According to experts, the number of unreported cases is likely to be higher on the continent with its 1.3 billion people.
