San Francisco When board members of software companies talk about what the future of the Internet looks like, they tend to focus more on the possibilities than on their prerequisites. This was also the case when the Facebook group, now renamed Meta, outlined its concept of an all-encompassing metaverse a few weeks ago.

In impressive demonstration videos, people teleported from the sofa at home to a concert hall or meeting room at the other end of the world with little effort. All they needed was simple glasses with a slim frame – almost indistinguishable from a simple visual aid without any electronics.

The truth, however, is different. Anyone who wants to take a trip into virtual reality today can hardly avoid bulky headsets and wired controllers for hand control. According to industry estimates, the number of devices sold worldwide is just in the low double-digit million range.
