Dusseldorf Thomas Ulbrich has earned a reputation as a troubleshooter at Volkswagen. Wherever there are problems, wherever production is stuck, wherever the software isn’t ready on time – that’s where the 56-year-old car manager steps in. For just a year and a half he was Head of Development at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand as Board Member, and the next new position is already waiting for him.

On October 1, Ulbrich will take over the newly created position of board member responsible for “New Mobility”, also in the VW brand management. This was announced at the beginning of the week from company circles. Volkswagen declined to comment. “No comment,” said a spokesman.

The key transformation areas of electromobility and digitization are brought together in this new board department. Ulbrich takes care of the models from the ID electric series and the new Trinity project. Trinity stands for the second electric generation of Volkswagen; these cars are to be produced in Wolfsburg from 2026 and be able to compete with Tesla.
