So far, the US plant has only installed batteries in hybrid models. Pure electric cars will soon roll off the assembly line.
Spartanburg Johannes Zirngibl speaks plain language. “There has never been such a change at BMW,” says the assembly manager in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the largest plant of the Bavarian car manufacturer. “We are converting our production while production is ongoing. And touch every single section.” 1,600 employees would have to be retrained for this, plus new production techniques and tools.
The change that Zirngibl is talking about was decreed in Munich. It’s about the conversion to electromobility, which BMW boss Oliver Zipse now wants to push ahead with. For Spartanburg, this means that production of the new electric cars based on the new electric architecture should start in 2025.
BMW is investing 1.7 billion dollars in Spartanburg for this purpose. The group’s largest plant is being prepared for the production of electric cars for a billion dollars. 700 million dollars flow into the development of its own battery production.
