The latest revelations about how the Chinese state is treating the Uyghur Muslim minority in western China’s Xinjiang province are harrowing. In the system of oppression, the documents show, just going to a gym is enough to get them locked away for years.

But the real scandal is that there has been evidence of these abuses for years – and yet everything went on as if they didn’t exist. For years, the families of those affected in Xinjiang have faced severe repression to clarify the truth.

For years, international media correspondents on China have risked their safety and that of their families to report on grievances.

As early as 2019, the “China Cables” and shortly thereafter the “Karakax List” used authenticated documents from inside the Chinese state apparatus to show how the local people are oppressed. It’s all the details as they are in the most recent releases.

European politicians have closed their eyes. Beyond warning words, everything was “business as usual”. With support from Berlin, individual German companies, especially car manufacturers, have even further increased their dependence on the market.

Also because the world has looked the other way, Xinjiang has developed into a police state in recent years. The people there are monitored around the clock. Hardly anyone dares to open their mouths anymore. Religious sites have disappeared, lives irrevocably destroyed. The horror, it was known for a long time. That too is part of this man-made tragedy.
