Beijing Baidu plans to launch two “smart” electric cars in 2023. At the auto show in Guangzhou on Friday, the Chinese Internet group presented its first production vehicle Robo-01, a family SUV, and the design model of an electric coupe. The vehicles, which Baidu calls “car robots”, were developed together with carmaker Geely in the Jidu joint venture.
Baidu wants to “revolutionize” the auto industry, as the search engine operator confidently announced. If the Robo-01 model goes into series production as planned in 2023, it should be “one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world,” says car expert Tu Le of the Handelsblatt. For Tesla, but also for other premium manufacturers, Jidu could become a serious competitor, explains the founder of the market research and consulting company Sino Auto Insights.
