The head of autonomous driving at Bosch USA actually had everything prepared down to the last detail. Together with their cooperation partner Mercedes-Benz, they screwed dozens of sensors into the floor in the parking garage of the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown LA. Cool drinks provided. A dozen journalists and two camera crews invited. But the demonstration fails: The Mercedes simply does not want to park without a driver.
“Connectivity issues” are to blame, the hasty explanation goes. It then works on later attempts. But he’s not quite convincing yet, the autopilot from Bosch, which in the future will steer cars to their parking space as if by magic.
