Vienna The current phase of the war is a brutal one for Ukraine. But not all news is bad: On Wednesday, for the first time since the start of the Russian war of aggression more than a year ago, the governor of the Donetsk region recorded a day without civilian casualties.

For the soldiers in Bachmut, on the other hand, death and wounding are omnipresent. Nevertheless, the Ukrainians continue to hold the city, which is also in the Donetsk Oblast.

By sending reinforcements, Kiev has recently stabilized the front, kept the supply route open and prevented encirclement. At the same time, the Russians continue to put pressure on the eastern part of Bakhmut. They advanced long distances to the Bakhmutka River. This now forms the front. According to the Ukrainian think tank Center for Defense Strategies, the enemy controls 40 percent of the city.
