“Artificial Intelligence Created Images Cannot Be Copyrighted”

Like Midjourney and DALL-E 2 AI-powered visual creation toolscaused a great controversy in the digital art world as well. While some of the artists argued that these images were not original and ruined the art, some of them expressed that they saw artificial intelligence as a useful tool.

Whether or not the copyright for the images created with these tools could be held was also a matter of debate. But today, a striking decision came from a large-caliber institution. U.S. Copyright Office, images created with Midjourney will not be copyrighted ruled.

“Images are not man made”

The provision in question covers the comic book recently published by Kristina Kashtanova. Zarya of the Dawn given for. Kristina had created all the visuals in the comic through Midjourney. The US Copyright Office reported that Kristina’s texts and the layout of the novel are subject to copyright, but did not say the same for the images.

The institution used the expressions “not man-made” for the images. The author of the comic, Kristina, on the other hand, stated that the images produced with artificial intelligence also contain creativity in her social media sharing. That part of Kristina’s statement was as follows:

“It is extremely important to understand that the output of the Generative AI model is dependent on the creative input of the artist and is not random.”
