1. Culture: Artificial intelligence composes and paints

In autumn, a production was staged in the Semperoper Dresden in which AI created music, text and singing in phases – in real time in front of the audience and without human intervention. For the use of the singing AI, experts programmed and trained an algorithm, the voice of a soprano was fed in digitally.

Deutsche Telekom had previously completed Beethoven’s tenth symphony with the help of AI. Ludwig van Beethoven died before he could finish composing the work. While AI used to only be able to update music for a few seconds, technology has now learned to compose for several minutes. However, a complete symphony is still only created with human intervention: a composer had put together selected sections that the computer had previously generated.
