Armin Laschet reaches for the last straw

Armin Laschet does not want to hear about a resignation yet. It is said that the “People’s Party” fears that the party will fall into chaos if he leaves the bridge in these stormy times. But would that really be the case?

A special party conference would elect a new chairman and with him entirely new deputies. New heads, new thoughts would be given space. The members are allowed to have their say and discuss again, as was the case for a short time in 2018 when it came to the successor to Angela Merkel and the 388,000 members today still felt that they were important.

These days, the state of the Union is strikingly reminiscent of the situation of the SPD after the 2017 federal election: Like Laschet, Chancellor candidate Martin Schulz, who comes from the Aachen area, had the worst result of his party since 1949. Like Laschet, he entered the Bundestag via the state list, thought about resigning as party leader, but stayed.
