Apple continues to move production from China to India.

Bangalore According to insiders, Apple and its Taiwanese supplier Foxconn pushed for a fundamental liberalization of labor laws in the southern Indian state of Karnataka earlier this month. The Financial Times reports, citing three people familiar with the matter. This led to new laws allowing, among other things, 12-hour shifts and night work for women, similar to corporate practice in China, the report said.
The Karnataka government previously said Apple’s iPhones will soon be assembled in the state. A total of 300 hectares are planned for a factory. Apple, Foxconn and the Karnataka government did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
Apple continues to shift manufacturing out of China after tough Covid restrictions disrupted manufacturing of new iPhones and other devices in the country. The manufacturer is also trying to avoid major business losses due to tensions between Beijing and Washington.
