Apple Explained Why iPhone 15 Pro Changed Color

Apple’s new iPhone 15 series is on the agenda this time with the “color change” of the Pro models. Clarifying the issue on its official support page, Apple put an end to the discussions.

Apple, which said goodbye to the iconic Lightning port with the iPhone 15 models, has to deal with false news about new iPhones this year, as every year. IThe titanium frame of the Phone 15 Pro and Pro Max models has changed color like their claims…

Using the titanium element in the Pro models, Apple aimed to produce a much lighter and also much more durable phone. Although the iPhone 15 Pro Max failed with its rear glass breaking during bending tests, the titanium frame of the devices prevents damage to the vital units inside. But using titanium comes with another price: Oxidation!

For those who are just learning about the subject and are curious, the “color change” that is said to occur in the frames of the iPhone 15 Pro looks like this:

Yes, it looks a bit dirty, but the fact that the color seems to have changed, especially in areas where skin contact is intense, gives us the first clue.

Posts about the subject on various social media accounts contain misleading statements:

Yes, Apple made a statement about the issue on its official support page, but this statement has nothing to do with “case use” or the existing “color change”. If the news sources you follow do not follow technology correctly, unfortunately you have received misleading information. Let’s fix it together.

Why does the color of iPhone 15 Pro change?

Theoretically, it is not actually a color change in the images, and the reason why it occurs is that the titanium in the frame undergoes “oxidation” due to the oils from our hands. However, this oxidation is not permanent or damaging like rust.

What causes misconceptions in unfounded news? “use without a case” warning It is made for all iPhone models that have been offered for sale to date, to protect the phones against scratches, dust and dirt.

By the way, let’s say that the color change issue is not something that Apple noticed after launching the phone and said “oh, wow, that’s what happens”, it was done consciously 🙂

Apple explains the reason for the color change on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max as follows;

apple description page

“For iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, oil on your skin may temporarily discolor the outer band. Wiping your iPhone with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth will restore its original appearance.”

This statement is currently only available on Apple’s English support page for the US market. In the Turkish version of the same page for the Turkish market, there is no additional information about the color change on the iPhone 15s.

As you can see from the same support page, the “use without a case” warning is made to protect not only the iPhone 15s but all iPhones against dust, dirt and scratches. Of course, you can use both the iPhone 15 Pro and all other iPhones without a case if you risk scratches.

Do not use alcohol wet wipes, bleach or detergent cloth to improve the color of iPhone 15 Pro!

Apple has another important warning about iPhone cleaning: “Fingerprint resistant on your iPhone oleophobic (oil-repellent) coating is available. “Cleaning products and abrasive materials reduce this coating and can scratch your iPhone.”

In addition, the “oleophobic” coating in question is not included in the cases where Apple uses titanium. Since the titanium surface retains the oil transmitted from our body in that area, harmless oxidation causes the color to appear different. When the damp cloth removes this oil from the titanium surface, the color returns to its previous state.
