Frankfurt 2005 was a sad year for German aviation fans. At that time, the last Dornier 328 left the production halls in Oberpfaffenhofen. The icon of German aviation was also the last commercial aircraft to be developed and built by a German company.
Deutsche Aircraft wants to continue this tradition almost 20 years later and build a modern D328eco variant in Leipzig. The company, which belongs to the US group Sierra Nevada Corporation, will start building the production hall on Tuesday.
The project is supported by the federal government via KfW. Politicians want to secure aviation know-how in Germany. The construction of commercial aircraft is dominated worldwide by Airbus and Boeing. Finding buyers for a small regional aircraft with up to 40 passengers will not be easy.
