Athens, Madrid, Rome, Helsinki The biblical figure Methuselah allegedly lived 969 years. In a figurative sense, the European community of states is a Methuselah – it is literally an “old world”. For decades, birth rates have been falling and populations have been shrinking. Today the average age of EU citizens is 44 years, in South America and Asia it is just over 30.
The continent with the oldest population in the world is confronted with a disproportion like no other region of the world: fewer and fewer employed people are faced with more and more pensioners.
Take Germany as an example: According to a projection by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the potential labor force in Germany will likely drop by 7.2 million between 2020 and 2035 for demographic reasons.
