Kyiv, Lviv White steam rises in the cold blue sky. It smells like warm bread and the breakfast table. The steam comes from a factory where oat flakes are pressed and muesli mixes are packed. Ukrbakalya is the name of the factory in the village of Chevchenkove, and on March 8, 2022 production stopped here.

On that day, the Russian army came in the direction of Kiev with its 100-kilometer-long military column, captured the village located just 25 kilometers from the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital and fought fierce battles for a month in order to conquer Kiev after all.

The security guard from the 20 meter high roof of the factory counted 51 tanks, 20 troop carriers, four multiple rocket launchers and even more military equipment and reported the numbers of the invaders to his superior, who passed them on to the Ukrainian general staff. With consequences: The Ukrainians destroyed the enemy’s tanks with a rocket attack.
